"Burnt"

This past weekend KatieCakes alongside Wake N' Bakery got to be guest judges at The Children's Culinary Institute's "Burnt" (their version of "chopped"). The kids got "mystery bags" each round with 3 items they had to use in a recipe. They also had some optional extras in their "pantries". From corn bread pancakes to bologna maple bacon, the experience was exciting and sometimes scary to say the least. We especially liked the graham cracker cake balls-genius! Thanks for inviting us CCI-we had a blast!!

That thar is peaches on sponge cake topped with blue berries, coconut. rainbow sprinkles, graham cracker crumbles, & an interesting icing/milk combo.

Red & Yellow Spring Wedding

Traditional white wedding cake with white frosting, we had fun taking creative control on this wedding cake. The bride requested something simple with red and yellow flowers, the rest was up to us. I love a nice simple wedding cake...don't you?

Cowboy cake

Rebecca-a reapeat customer- requested this western cake for her sister-in-law's cowboy themed baby shower. Our famous Triple chocolate cake covered in fondant with icing accents. I sort of loved it.

How 'bout that cute name? Sawyer...love it!

Coupled with about 45 cow print cupcakes, I bet this cake was just perfect for a little cowboy!

Thomas the skull train?

"Huh?" was my reaction when my cute hubby and partner cake maker told me his brother and sister-in-law had requested a Thomas the Train cake for our little nephew Leland's 1st birthday party. A Thomas the Train cake with one alteration...a skull instead of a cute smiling Thomas face. Huh?
Meet the Workman fam. The Bryceon Workman fam that is. That there is Chloe...Leland's Mommy. She's pretty edgy and has a funky thing for skulls. Combined with Leland's love for Thomas the train, we melded these to seemingly un-meshable interests into a pretty awesome cake.

I was still on baby recovery (we'd just had our new precious little addition, sweet Zoey Claire) so Bry took the reigns on this one. He's pretty amazing eh?

We also made this little number for Leland's smash cake...

I think he liked it.
Happy 1st Birthday Leland!

Baby blocks cake

For a work friends small baby shower...a tiny cake is just right! I love to do mini cakes...less baking time and more time for decorating! This one was especially fun because Karis let me have creative control with just a little guidance about color and them. Thanks Karis!

Ladybug Cake

This was an exciting cake to make because it was for our very own tiny little thing! Our baby turned one last week and we celebrated with a ladybug party!

Bryan did about 99% of this cake and spent a lot of time thinking about what he wanted to do. He really wanted to try doing some fondant lattice work but when we googled the internet for ideas we couldn't find any. I don't know if it hasn't been done before or we just didn't search very well but here it is ladies and gentleman....*drumroll please*....the very first fondant lattice cake ; )

We didn't get any pictures but the inside was red and black too!

Our lil lady tore into the top tier...too cute.

Blue & Green Wedding Cake

Jones Wedding

Simple and beautiful this wedding cake was straight up traditional white cake with white frosting. The colors were Black and Blue and the last minute revisions to this cake (florist issues resulted in a lack of flowers so the bride requested black ribbon instead) really made all the difference!

Karch Wedding Cake

Congratulations to the new Mr. & Mrs. Karch! Married on 1/1/11, I was so happy for this couple who contains one part my good friend Tyberious. The cake flavors were lemon with a whipped raspberry filling, german chocolate with coconut pecan filling, and red velvet with cream cheese frosting filling. yum.

Winnie The Pooh Cake

My Dear Shosh had her baby shower this weekend. The theme: Winnie The Pooh of course! The cake was a delicious spice cake with cream cheese filling accompanied by spice cake & whipped cream cheese bites. Bryan is becoming somewhat of a fondant Winnie the Pooh expert if you'll remember from this cake. We finished the fondant topping off with a little steam for a nice n' shiny look! I can't wait to see Baby James in a month or so!

Tangled Cake

This year for Jolie's birthday her mom requested a Tangled cake. The tower was made of fruity pebbles (because they're gluten free!) and the landscape was chocolate gluten free cake. Yummy and tons of fun! Happy 3rd birthday Jolie!

Maroon and Gold Wedding Cake

ASU colors? No, the beautiful and creative wedding colors selection of Rachel Smithson. I met with the happy and easy going bride to come up with an idea for her wedding cake and after tossing around a few ideas she came up with design all by herself-it turned out pretty dang cute!

Fondant over white cake with whipped raspberry filling and a few styrofoam tiers for show-congrats to Rachel & Jordan.

The Yankees are the best baseball team that ever walked the face of the earth

I was pretty ecstatic to make this cake mainly for reasons stated in the blog title, but also because it was commissioned by the young wife of an air force soldier coming home from training. She told us that they'd have a little time together before he left again for a whole year! My brother-in-law is in the military and is often gone for extended periods of time and my heart goes out to all military wives-you amazing women-you are strong and capable and brave and make sacrifices I'm to weak to make. Thank You!
We surprised the hubby with this Yankee's cap cake which was chocolate with whipped strawberry filling-yum!

Cake Boss

This pink & zebra striped cake is a pretty darn cute and very popular design. If you've ever watched TLC's Cake Boss you may recognize it as the cake Buddy made for his niece's 13th birthday. I've seen lots of different versions of this cute n' sassy design so I was pretty excited to create one of my own when Amber sent me the picture straight off of the episode for her sister-in-law Tiffany's birthday.
Our favorite triple chocolate cake covered in fondant stripes, balls, bow, and stars-Happy Birthday to Tiffany!

Beauty and the Beast

A Beauty and the Beast cake for one Beautiful future bride! It was so fun to deliver this cake to Meghan's movie themed bridal shower because it fit into the decor perfectly! I'm always amazed at the talented hosts that commission cakes from us and the Langes are definitely among the best! An old fashioned popcorn machine, roses, dramatic black and red sparkled color scheme in tribute to an old cinema feel with flair!
This was a white cake (my personal favorite!) with whipped strawberry frosting filling, decorated with icing, gum paste roses, and edible shimmery white glitter-A very romantic and tasty cake that had us singing 'we're painting the roses red' for days after completion!
Congratulations to the future Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Lange!

Fairy Baby Cake

Lisa's fairy themed baby shower was perfect for a tiny little one named Violet (expected in August!) Lisa is a katiecakes return customer so we knew exactly what flavor cake she'd like-triple chocolate, the same as her wedding cake! (Lisa loves this cake so much, she is the only bride I know who requested a whole tier of the cake be wrapped and sent to her honeymoon suite with her!) We were so excited to be able to share in the happy event of Daniel and Lisa's first baby as well. Wild color depth, shape, and vinery sprinkled with golden shimmer dust created one mystical, magical cake! Congrats to the 3 of you!
